Project description

The building was built by the occupying Germans in 1941 to be used as an officers’ mess, and will now be transformed into a kindergarten for 90 children and 23 employees.

Through a combination of reuse, repurposing, restoration, rehabilitation and the use of new technology, the initiative contributes to waste reduction and the preservation of cultural heritage. The project uses the ZERO methodology to minimize greenhouse gas emissions from material use, energy consumption and transport.

The kindergarten will act as a gathering place for the neighborhood. The outdoor areas will be part of the surrounding public urban space when the kindergarten is closed for the day, and should be an inviting, inclusive and stimulating place for the neighborhood. Trees, shrubs and plants in the surrounding area will be surveyed for reuse and replanting. Outside of opening hours parts of the kindergarten will be available for use by different groups with community interests such as education, culture and other activities.

Marineholmen is being developed with the aim of becoming a forward-looking innovation district with a mix of housing, commerce, research and education. The project’s proximity to bus and tram stops makes reductions in greenhouse gas emissions from transportation possible.
