Project description

Fornebu is currently being transformed from an airport into a new urban area. The Fornebu Airport 2035 project is about further developing the buildings at the old main airport, which was established in 1939 and operated until 1998. The buildings were previously used for hangars, workshops, an arrival hall, restaurant, administration building and two flight towers. Today you'll find galleries, an art shop, café, wine bar, a small stage/event venue, frame workshop, car museum, historical museum, various workshops and premises that house around 100 performing artists. Norway's largest TV studio is located in the old aircraft hangar.

In many ways, the old airport buildings represent the soul of Fornebu. The buildings have a unique significance in Norwegian history, and in the future the area will become the “old town” –  a place where you can experience

Sustainability and climate

With the Fornebu Airport 2035 project, the municipality wants to realize the ambition of Fornebu as a zero-emission area. The master plan sets out priorities and measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as well as sustainability in general. As much of the existing building stock as possible will be retained and a reuse survey has been initiated to ensure material efficiency.

The listed building stock is expected to limit the possibility of achieving the nZEB level, but the project will strive to reduce energy needs as much as possible through energy efficiency and the implementation of renewable energy, as well as looking at the possibilities for interaction and energy exchange with the surrounding buildings.
